Holiday Greeting - Finding Joy During the Holidays

December 20, 2017

“The holidays are often seen as a time of joy: ruddy cheeks, festive parties, and twinkling laughter, all wrapped in a warm, tinsel-framed glow. It’s the most wonderful time of the year! It may be the ‘season to be jolly,’ but not everyone finds joy in the holidays,” writes Annie Parsons for On Being.1

If the holidays become overwhelming, try one of these strategies for restoring your equilibrium:2

• Share with others. Interacting with other people is critical to our happiness. Don’t spend the holidays alone. If your family is far away, interact with people by volunteering at an organization.
• Get into nature. There may come a time when you are tired of other people! When you reach your limits, take a hike in the woods or a walk through the park.
• Choose an experience. Over time, the joy of an experience is far more lasting than the pleasure of a tangible gift. Spend your money on experiences.
• Give to others. Research has found it is truly more satisfying to give than to receive. Remember, giving time can be just as valuable as giving money.

We wish you a peaceful and joyous holiday season!
